Owl Butterfly (Caligo Menmon) - unspread (wings closed)
Owl Butterfly (Caligo menmon)
- Wingspan: 3.75 - 4.5 inches (when spread)
- Length: 4 - 5 inches
- Origin: Central & South America
The Owl butterfly's underside is almost always displayed because of the two giant golden "owl" eyespots on them. They are a defense mechanism used to scare off or confuse potential predators, but don't let them scare you off too! The topside of the Owl butterfly wings can come in a variety of warm browns to shimmering blues, if that's what you prefer to see instead.
